The Drum understands that Pearson Advertising & Marketing, the North East recruitment business which went out of business in November 2010, left debts of over £1.1m.

Sources say that the Middlesbrough-based company, which also had offices in Leeds and Newcastle, left creditors including NCJ, Johnston Press and Newsquest owed more than £100k each.

Almost 40 staff lost their jobs when the firm was placed into administration, with administrators saying the company had been affected by public sector budget cuts in recent months, especially having specialised in public sector recruitment, and that this was unexpected to improve for some time.

Two directors of the collapsed business, former managing director Lillian Hughes and strategic development director Dan Millard, have since taken over Pearson’s digital assets and set up digital agency Retox Digital.
