News Corp readies iPad-exclusive title for launch
News Corp is set to launch the first ever digital daily iPad paper, The Daily, the latest manifestation of a strategy that aims to encourage consumers to pay for online news.
The news conglomerate is gambling that its flagging print newspaper business can be offset by focussing effort on a digital publications, The Daily being but the most recent example.
Rupert Murdoch will be on hand to launch the venture, alongside Apple vice president of intervices Eddy Cue, at the Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York on February 2.
The long awaited digital title’s launch hasn’t been without its hitches, an earlier launch was reportedly delayed owing to technical glitches, and The Daily will be available solely to US based consumers for 99c a week.
Analysts will be watching The Daily’s success or failure with interest, iPad editions of major print magazines have been in sharp decline with Wired seeing downloads drop from 100,000 in June to 23,000 in November.
