Kristal Ireland, digital marketing honcho at Welcome to Yorkshire, introduces her day as guest editor of thedrum.co.uk...

As Digital Marketing Manager for Welcome to Yorkshire I am very passionate and excited by all things digital. I’m a Yorkshire lass born and bred so being in a position to drive tourism for Yorkshire is something I take very seriously and really enjoy doing. That said, I am known by my colleagues as someone with a bit of a sense of humour, so that might explain some of my choices for marketing campaigns that I wanted to highlight this year.

I’d like to think I am a bit of a geek and I love to see how new technology can be used to innovate in marketing campaigns and reach new audiences, hence looking to future use of things like QR codes and geo-location based marketing. I didn’t study digital at University; I actually have a degree in Philosophy, but I have always been fascinated with the way technology impacts on our lives and it’s great to be able to turn that interest into what is now my career.

I hope the content I have picked reflects some of the key issues that will continue to affect the marketing industry into this year. I particularly thought it was worth revisiting the article on graduate tips for getting the job you want; it is important that we don’t forget the up and coming talent in our industry. I was also really pleased to see the new valuation for Twitter reported on recently; Twitter has just exploded in 2010 and it reminded of the sceptics who insisted ‘it will never take off’.

So that’s a bit about me, I hope you enjoy the content I have picked and it sparks, or at least adds, to the debate.

Have an excellent 2011!

Throughout today Kristal will be picking out her favourite campaigns and news stories from 2010 and looking ahead to what the next 12 months has in store. Her choices will run alongside The Drum's regular news reports.
