The Wills and Kate marriage bandwagon rolled on today with publication of a Mario Testino captured publicity shot of the happy couple. Despite being highly regarded within the profession the image hasn't received universal praise however.

Arthur Edwards, the Sun’s Royal photographer, described the informal snap as a “real departure from some of the stuffy images of the past.”

Edwards stated: “William's got his arms around Kate in a very protective hold, like he's saying, 'I'm going to take care of you'. It's like a snap - it has captured the moment. To my mind it's an excellent photograph.”

The Guardian’s head of photography, Roger Tooth, dared to digress however, calling the image: “A symphony in beige.”

Tooth scathed: “What we have here is an attempt at arch informality: William wearing Mario’s woolly, but over his own starched white shirt – presumably ironed by a valet.“ He concluded: “Isn’t a portrait of an heir to the throne and his consort meant to have something of the icon about it?”
