Sports marketer and Drum blogger Patrick Kavanagh has questioned the action of Scottish referees who have chosen to call strike action this weekend, forcing the Scottish Football Association to look at flying in foreign whistle blowers.

Writing in his blog for The Drum, Kavanagh highlights whether he believes that the referees will receive much sympathy from football fans and the public at large, questions the timing of the strike when many are losing their jobs and struggling to make ends meet, and the job that newly appointed chief executive of the SFA Stewart Regan is doing in firefighting the story.

"Maybe just maybe, the strike announcement could have taken place the day the Royal Wedding was announced. Sure, it would have been lost in the shuffle, but then that would be a good thing wouldn’t it? Or maybe they’re actually PR geniuses, getting people to listen to their excessive whinging, and getting them talking. Though it may even be breach of contract to walk out on the SFA, all I really hear is whinging," he says of the timing of the strike.
