Stephen Fry appears to have quit Twitter following a backlash over comments he is alleged to have made about women's sexuality.

Fry was quoted by the Observer claiming that the only reason women slept with men is that "sex is the price they are willing to pay for a relationship".

But he took to Twitter yesterday to tell his followers, who number almost two million, that he had been misquoted by the Observer which was itself reprinting an interview he gave to Attitude magazine.

He wrote: "So some fucking paper misquotes a humorous interview I gave, which itself misquoted me and now I'm the Antichrist. I give up."

Fry's next Tweet was simply "Bye bye" and he has changed his biography on his page to "No longer in service".

Reports today also claim that Fry, a member of the British Academy of Twits, has been ordered to remove a a tweet in which he posted behind-the-scenes snaps from the new Harry Potter film.

Last November Fry quit Twitter when a fellow user derided his posts as “a bit . . . boring . . .". He later returned to the site after being inundated with messages of encouragement.
