Facebook's 500 million users will soon be able to call one another for free after Telefonica SA, the company that owns O2, struck a deal with the world's most popular social networking site.

The mobile company is releasing an app called Jajah Social Call that will make it possible for Facebook's registered members to call their friends for free with a single click.

Jajah chief executive, Trevor Healy, said: "Facebook calling has been the holy grail for telecommunications companies all over the world who are trying to come to terms with the rise of social networking."

The application will initially only be available on Blackberry devices.
