The Dennis the Menace Fanclub, first launched in 1976, has been closed to new members by publisher DC Thomson as the club undergoes a migration from a postal based system to an online model.

The Beano Club, as it was latterly known, charged £12.99 for an annual membership, providing participants with a newsletter, badge and birthday card amongst other benefits.

In its place a new website, www.beano.com, is to be launched in October although no decision has yet been made on whether the site will be free or operate as a subscription service.

The comic club peaked in popularity with 1.25m members but has since dwindled to a mere 10,000, with ages ranging from seven to 70.

It is hoped that a cheaper and more versatile system will see the Beano community grow once more and create a “VIP feeling” for fans.
