It’s easy work if you can get it. Caucasian people resident in China are finding themselves in high demand from Chinese businesses it seems in a bizarre inverse form of racial one upmanship

With a CV no deeper than the colour of the applicants skin firms in the booming Far East economy are splashing out a reported £300 a day, with food and transport thrown in, to recruit the superficial talents of white stage dressing.

So called ‘face jobs’ simply require the winning candidate to mooch around conferences and mingle with trade representatives in an elaborate bid to showcase apparent international connections.

The practice, advertised in English language magazines as “Rent a Laowai”, is borne out of smaller firms insecurities when dealing in the domestic market and is seen to impart an air of sophistication in a country which has only recently embraced capitalism.

Trade in the sector is booming with new companies being established such as ChinaESL which boasts it can find foreign singers, bands and actors as well as hiring students as stand-ins.

A further fillip to trade is the circumvention of visa requirements, air fares and accommodation which can be huge.
