Parents be forewarned, it may only be July but that hasn’t stopped retailers from casting a forward eye over some of the Christmas contenders most likely to fly off the shelves thanks to pester power.

Toy store Hamley’s are looking to inject a little enthusiasm into the pre-Christmas market by touting what they see as this seasons must have gadgets and playthings.

Amongst the products likely to put a Buzz into the holiday season this year is a plastic astronaut, star of looming summer smash Toy Story 3, which is likely to go head to head with upstart Kung Zhu Hamsters.

Shoppers of a certain vintage are likely to be au fait with Buzz Lightyear, who has been jet packing to infinity and beyond since 1995, but the robot hamsters may be less familiar.

Described as the boy’s version of last years smash, Zhu Zhu Pets, the “warrior” rodents were described by a Hamley’s spokesperson as armour clad balls of fur which battle via smashing into each other in a display of sound and fury.

Hamley’s believe this year continues a trend in which toy manufacturers are going increasingly high-tech to seduce increasingly hard to please youngsters with such tech heavy presents as the VTech Kidizoom video camera and the Ferrari F1 Electric Ride-On also likely to make an appearance in countless living rooms come December 25.

Traditionalists need fret not however; old stalwarts such as Lego, teddy bears and board games are still likely to fly off the shelves.
