Following on from our story earlier in the week looking at the weekend Twitter travails of Unite joint general secretary Derek Simpson The Drum spoke to Twitter expert Mark Shaw to understand why so many professionals fall victim to ‘the curse of Twitter’.

“With Twitter comes great responsibility” avers Shaw who pints out: “A delicate stage in private negotiations with BA probably isn’t a good use for the technology.” So why do it? “Perhaps because Simpson was working to an agenda,” muses Shaw.

Just as a good plumber never blames his sink plunger a good Twitterer shouldn’t blame their Blackberry says Shaw who urges: "Don't blame the tools, a lack of education and training is to blame for some cases of using Twitter poorly.”

Shaw points out that even though you may not be shouting something from the rooftops the effect on Twitter can be magnified many times.

“Too much is left to the individual”, reckons Shaw. "I'm not saying individuals shouldn't be using Twitter but policies should be in place to give employees a clear mandate and guidance on what information they should and shouldn't be providing.”
