Design agency Young has created a campaign to shine a positive light on a Manchester neighbourhood which is more accustomed to bad press.

Gorton, which was once the setting for Channel 4 series Shameless, is taking part in the RECLAIM mentoring project which aims to energise young people from disadvantaged communities.

Young's campaign is intended to turn "some of the perceived negatives of Gorton into positive good news stories" by celebrating the achievements of local residents.

Abi Robertson, community project officer at Urbis, RECLAIM's organiser, said: "We wanted to use billboards and bus stops, which normally display advertisements selling nationally branded products, and turn this common use on its head by portraying local people and their stories to shine a light on what is being achieved underneath the grime and celebrate what can and is being achieved in the Gorton area.

"We've had a lot of great feedback from local residents. The posters have added vibrancy in their locations and a sense of pride in the area.''
