The Scottish Government has overhauled its e-communications system in an effort to reinforce all the is external and internal email and SMS messages throughout its departments.

The overhaul will see an improved sign up process to allow for simpler registration and allow users to manage their preferences and receive relevant opt-in content.

For the first time, this will allow the Scottish Government to tailor its communications to the individual needs of subscribers offering a greater degree of personalisation.

Dave Hall, digital communications manager at the Scottish Government, explained: "The new system offers a much greater degree of flexibility to our subscribers and enhances the means by which the Scottish Government provides information to them. The ability to tailor e-communications to the needs of our users is a big step forward."

Edinburgh digital consultancy, Storm ID has developed an intranet version of the message system for internal communications, while the addition of a new, more sophisticated content management system will aim to make it easier for the Scottish Government to bulk import users’ details while also creating and targeting groups of users based on their chosen preferences.

This is supported by an easy-to-use administrative interface for Government communications team and better target emails to reach their intended recipients.

Storm ID tested the mailing client thoroughly to maximise delivery, and also created templates for mobile devices to account for the rise in handheld email browsing.

Social networking sharing is also integrated, with the facility to publicise the newsletter on Twitter.
