An independent production company with a limited budget is taking a novel approach to marketing its debut film - by getting it featured on Coronation Street.

Splintered, a horror film from independent outfit Not A Number, is due to make an appearance in the soap's two episodes on Friday.

It will feature in the storyline about the strained relationship between Corrie characters Sian and Sophie.

The Corrie plot sees the teens arrange a double date with their boyfriends Ryan and Lee where they huddle around the TV to watch the horror film. But the atmosphere soon threatens to boil over as they watch the chilling action unfold on screen.

Splintered producer Rachel Richardson-Jones said: "It's undoubtedly tough to compete in the UK film industry. You have to make the most of every potential plug, so we jumped at the chance to showcase Splintered on the soap.

"Corrie knew about our annual horror film festival Grimmfest and asked if we might have a suitable movie to show clips from. They didn't know we’d just completed our own. It seemed a perfect tie in for us – and a great way to give horror film fans a sneak peak."

Splintered is due for release in UK cinemas in July. It follows the story of Sophie, a troubled teen fleeing the clutches of a wild beast. Sophie’s nightmare continues when she awakes to find herself imprisoned by a mysterious and psychotic captor.
