Scottish Enterprise and Forestry Commission Scotland on behalf of mountain bike project the 7stanes Working Group, are looking to commission a research consultancy.

The consultancy chosen will undertake robust research into three distinct areas of work related to the future development of the 7stances - Market segmentation of the 7stanes, Value of the 7stanes Brand and Assess the attitude of users / potential users and stakeholders regarding income generating initiatives such as Branded goods, Friends of scheme, donation schemes and more.

The 7stanes is a brand used to describe a series of mountain bike centres owned and managed by FCS across Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders.

In addition to developing the physical trails, the first two phases of the project also involved marketing, PR, business development and related infrastructure developments that have built on the awareness and reputation of the 7stanes.

The appointed consultancy will have access to a range of previous 7stanes research studies to provide background information on its strategic focus including the recent Sustaining the 7stanes Brand research by Roger Tym and Partners.

This research has led to the establishment of the Working Group consisting of private and public sector partners which is working towards the development of a Community Interest Company which will take over the management of the 7stanes brand and marketing.

The research undertaken will provide the framework for the new company while the appointed consultancy will be expected to undertake work in three stages.

Market Segmentation

The purpose of the research is to examine the current and potential market segments for the 7stanes mountain bike trails– and to develop a strategy to maintain and grow current segments and reach new segments.

Value of the Brand

The 7stanes trails are internationally recognised by a number of organisations (e.g. International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA), Professional Trail Builders Association and Northshore Mountain Bike Association) and has drawn interest from various public sector and private bodies to share the 7stanes experience at conferences in North America, Europe and Australia. However, research is required to understand the 7stanes Brand both in a national and international context.

Income Generation Initiatives

Undertake research with users/potential user groups, local businesses and potential sponsors to test attitudes towards a range of visitor payback / fundraising activities and sponsorship.

The contract will run between mid February until the end of July with the deadline for interest falling on 8 January. Invitations to tender will be dispatched on 19 January.
