Golden Twits winners announced
The results of the UK’s very first Twitter awards were announced this evening in London wiith winners including Duncan Bannatyne of Dragon’s Den and Aleksandr the Meerkat from comparethemarket.com.
From London nightclub Fabric some of Britains best Tweeters gathered to honour their finest and, in the spirit of Twitter itself, had to keep the winning speeches to 140 characters.
And amongst those voted Britain’s best Twitters was Duncan Bannatyne of Dragon’s Den fame who won in the celebrity category. He shared the honours with Alexandr the Meerkat from comparethemarketing.com.
Those who entered were asked to write 140 character submissions detailing why they deserved an award for their Twitter streams.
Wrote Bannatyne: “I am the best (and the most modest) of all the Dragons.”
And what were his objectives? “To reach an audience.”
Meanwhile Alexandr Orlov said he deserved an award, “because I am workings night and day to clear up confusion between meerkat and market. Plus, award would be perfect for use as toilet doorstop.”
There was not enough space to detail why he needed to keep his toilet door open.
There was also an award for Alan Rusbridger editor of The Guardian, who used Twitter to publicise a gagging injunction against his newspaper.
What were his objectives: “To make people aware that The Guardian could not report Parliament.”
Within days the gagging order was lifted.
Richard Draycott, editor of The Drum said, “Twitter is changing the way individuals, celebrities and companies communicate. It is high time it gets the recognition it deserves.”
