Corporation Pop has been appointed to develop a Second Life project for Manchester Metropolitan University, which will enable a module of the university’s BA (Hons) Film and Media course to be delivered through Second Life for the first time.

Dom Raban, managing director at Corporation Pop, said: “By running a course in Second Life the university can enhance blended learning opportunities, providing learners with experiences they would not be able to access through any other medium. The tools we create will include metaphors for the film making process and a game-based exercise for editing. They will enable the students to build their skills in the area as well as develop new techniques in a virtual world format.”

Paul Booth, senior lecturer in film and media at Manchester Metropolitan University, added: “The course is the first to be delivered almost entirely in Second Life. The Media Collaboration syllabus is designed to be contained within the virtual world; all exercises use a combination of real world skills and in-world production and distribution. Only two lectures will be delivered in a real world classroom as an introduction to Second Life and new media technology.”

The design is underway and the course is expected to be live by September 2009.
