Roses Ad Awards
If you’re an ad agency boss, you could probably be forgiven for hating True North’s MD, Martin Carr. Not only did he have the audacity to pen a piece in The Marketeer opining that “design agencies can produce great advertising but ad agencies can’t produce great design”, but now he, or rather his agency, follows that up by sweeping the board at this year’s Roses Advertising Awards. Thus proving the validity of at least half his argument. A word of advice, Martin. Look both ways before crossing the road on your way to work this month ...
True North, a self-confessed denizen of the design world, walked away from the awards with one silver and four gold gongs, including the coveted Grand Prix.
The swag bag for this particular smash and grab was loaded courtesy of the team’s outstanding work for the Imperial War Museum North. A client that the jury thought to be so open to creativity and genre (re)defining concepts that it also received the Client of the Year accolade.
As 2004 saw the highest ever number of entrants, it was perhaps appropriate that there was a bumper crop of gold, silver and bronzes harvested, ensuring that True North weren’t the only ones to stagger away from Manchester’s Palace Hotel exhausted, but certainly satisfied, by the night’s proceedings.
Other big winners on the evening included the team at EMAP Performance – TFM Radio, whose grin-inducing “The Affordables” executions earned them the Ray Sale Chairman’s Award. Quite a coup, although they deserved it for getting Clint Eastwood and Bruce Willis signed up to advertise South Cleveland Garages. Can we expect a sequel next year, chaps?
Manchester heavyweights BDH\\TBWA, McCann Erickson and CheethamBellJWT proved they can still pack hefty creative punches, with supremely healthy performances. In terms of the overall awards haul, the Lancashire agencies won this particular Roses war, but Yorkshire firms, led by the battling Poulter Partners, fought hard to secure a fair share of the spoils.
The North East and the Midlands didn’t go home empty-handed either, with Robson Brown taking home two silvers and a bronze, while RBH and McCann Erickson Birmingham collected a silver each. Derby’s Sam Design secured a bronze for its hard-hitting “Change” campaign for Nottingham City Council.
Again, this year’s Roses proved that creativity is not dictated by trendy postcodes and great ideas don’t reside solely in the confines of the capital. True North has thrown down the gauntlet to the ad agencies, who’ll be looking to wrest supremacy back from the designers in 2005, if not before. After all, the Roses Design Awards take place in October. Expect fireworks ...
