Burger King Japan will this month release a relatively unappetising-looking blackened squid-ink burger as part of its latest promotional menu.

The range of blackened burgers, part of the fast food chain’s Kuro Pearl and Kuro Diamond meals, uses charcoal to blacken the rolls and the cheese, which is then mixed with black pepper.

Additionally included are onions and garlic sauce which are dyed with squid ink to maintain the darkened shade.

Burger King had previously released the Kuro (Japanese for black) Burger range in 2012 but this latest iteration is the first to see every ingredient dyed a darker shade.

The firm claims the burgers will have a “favoured reception” among customers.

This is not the first case of a US fast food chain adopting its regional menu for locals’ tastebuds, however, earlier this year, Domino’s Pizza released a spicy banana pizza in southern India, which received a mixed response from customers.
