Much has been said about VCCP’s ‘Meerkat’ advertising campaign for Compare The Market. It’s undoubtedly been a smart, structured, though not particularly subtle, addition to our ad breaks over the last year and I’m sure Compare The Market will consider it money very well spent.

At the weekend I was doing my annual hit and run (or rather click and run) online Christmas shop, when I stumbled across ‘My Life & Times’ by Aleksandr Orlov. Yup, the Meerkat has his own ‘autobiography’. Nothing wrong with that you might think, except some further probing suggests it may yet top all best seller lists for ‘autobiographies’ out in 2010.

Were the anthropomorphic Russian rodent to actually exist, I’ve no doubt he’d be chuckling at the prospect of his book tanking the efforts of Tony Blair, Peter Mandelson, Alan Sugar, and erm Gok Wan.

So here’s to you annoying Meerkat, I’ll not buy your book, but I’ll give you this – you’ve been one hell of a marketing success whichever way I look at it.
