A new line of divorce-friendly furniture by Argentina-based Wunderman Thompson Lima and FC Home & Deco promises to take the pain out of separation with a sofa that can be split straight down the middle.

The equitable home furnishing solution has been born out of a realization that housebound couples are increasingly resorting to divorce as the nuclear option to settle their difference, with 340,000 warring partners calling in the lawyers last year in the US alone.

To cater for this rising demographic, ‘The Friendly Breakup Collection’ offers a subdivisible solution for splitting possessions straight down the middle.

Touted as the perfect sofa for anyone in a tenuous living arrangement, from co-habiting friends to short-lease tenants, the flexible lifestyle option ensures customers can take the weight off during some of life’s more stressful moments.

Federico Fontenla, president of Fontenla group, said: “The Friendly Breakup Collection includes furniture conceived as a unit but that can be divided into two, maintaining the initial aesthetics and utility; thus, facilitating the division of material goods. It is a collection that allows you to start over and move with a part of the original piece of furniture, but at the same time looks complete and can still be enjoyed. A simple but innovative idea that meant a lot of time, dedication and a great challenge from a design and functionality point of view.”

Named after infamous celebrity car crash relationships, the collection includes the Bradlston sofa; a GarnAfleck rug and the KanyDashian table to show that you are in good company, even when you find yourself alone. Modular construction ensures that the sofa can double as twin armchairs, while a separable table can be used as complementary his and her workspaces.

Previous attempts by companies to cater for divorcees have had split opinions, such as a legal firm’s iPhone app offering advice to anyone considering separation.
