Airbnb is offering the chance for one lucky travelling pair to sleep surrounded by 35,000 precious works of art, at the world's largest art museum - Le Musée du Louvre.

As part of the competition, the Louvre will be transformed into a home for the night, so the winners will see what happens behind its majestic walls when the lights go down.

As part of the package, the pair will be given a bespoke tour by an art historian, before toasting the Mona Lisa with a Renaissance-inspired aperitif and tucking into a feast 'hosted' by the Venus de Milo in a pop-up dining room. They will then be treated to an acoustic concert in Napoleon III's apartments.

To mark the famous pyramid's 30th anniversary, a mini version has been specifically designed as a bedroom for the guests to retire to after they tire from exploring the Louvre's many corridors of art.

This isn't the first time that Airbnb has upped the ante on its unique 'homes' for the night. In 2015, it offered the chance for a couple to spend one night in a specially erected bedroom in Paris' skull-lined catacombs.

One night at the Louvre is Airbnb's first competition since it dropped plans to host a promotional sleepover on The Great Wall of China, following a backlash from Beijing authorities.

France Airbnb's general manager, Emmanuel Marill said: "Paris is one of the most attractive cities in the world and the Louvre is one of the most loved and celebrated institutions in Paris.

"We are thrilled to partner with them and to offer exciting and unique experiences that will celebrate our community and welcome Parisians and international travellers to rediscover the museum in a new and authentic way.”

Discussing the Louvre's partnership with Airbnb, its deputy managing director, Anne-Laure Béatrix commented: “We are happy to offer this unique and special experience for two people to stay in the museum overnight, in a bespoke pyramid shaped bedroom.

"We know that many people would love the opportunity to wander alone at night through the Louvre and we want this to be a magical and unforgettable experience. With Airbnb’s partnership, we hope to encourage more people to discover how truly accessible and inspiring the wonders of art can be. “
