New Zealand Human Rights Commission mocks celebrity appeal ads in anti-racism film
New Zealand Human Rights Commission has launched a campaign to stop racism, which makes a play on the well-known celebrity appeal video.
New Zealand director Taika Waititi fronts anti-racism campaign
Fronted by Taika Waititi, the director of The Hunt for the Wilderpeople and the upcoming Thor Rhaganok film, the film sees Waititi call on kiwis to “help support an important cause: racism”.
The film is part of a campaign which calls on New Zealanders to show zero tolerance to racism, as racial tolerance and attacks become more prevalent around the world.
According to a statement, 1 in 3 complaints to the Human Rights Commission is about racial discrimination however, the majority of people do not complain when they’re humiliated or racially abused.
Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy, said, “Hatred and extremism is becoming normal in some places and we want to avoid that future for Aotearoa. Racial prejudice and intolerance starts small, in quiet places, in our everyday lives. When it becomes normalised it turns into overt racism and extremism.”
The campaign also includes a series of short films featuring New Zealand celebrities including actor Sam Neill and rugby player Sonny Bill Williams, as well as outdoor advertising.
The latest activity is part of an ongoing national anti-racism campaign called That’s Us, which enables New Zealanders to share their personal stories about racism in a bid to generate more awareness and conversation about the topic.
The campaign was created by Clemenger BBDO Touchcast Wellington with Curious Films and Match Photographers.
