American Idol sang itself off the air on Fox after 15 seasons in April 2016 with a glitzy finale full of past winners and superstars. ABC apparently doesn’t want the singing party to end, since it has announced that it is bringing back the music competition series for the 2017-2018 season.

American Idol returns to TV on ABC this fall

ABC News reported this morning (May 9) that it is bringing back American Idol this fall, but that the show’s host and judges have not been announced yet, which will happen at a later date.

The report quoted Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, who said in a statement: “’American Idol’ is a pop culture staple that left the air too soon. ABC is the right home to reignite the fan base. We are thrilled viewers will once again share in these inspiring stories of people realizing their dreams.”

No details of the show have been announced yet, including where it will be filmed and if Ryan Seacrest will return as host. Seacrest was recently announced as the new co-host of “Live with Kelly and Ryan” which films in New York, though Seacrest maintains homes in Los Angeles and New York.

Seacrest talked about the rumors of the return of American Idol on Monday’s "Live With Kelly and Ryan," but said he didn’t know until last week that “American Idol” was possibly being revived on ABC.

ABC tweeted out the American Idol logo with the ABC logo underneath to solidify the news to its followers, with the phrase “This…is #AmericanIdol--coming to @ABCNetwork in 2018!”
