The Liberal Democrats have taken inspiration from the 1993 film Groundhog Day in their latest party political broadcast (PPB), depicting a couple waking up every day to disappointing news following the EU referendum.

As the alarm goes off at 6am each morning, the pair listen to the morning’s radio news bulletin. It begins with new of Brexit and continues to serve up stories that disappoint them each day, such as the election of Donald Trump and the NHS winter crisis.

Tim Farron, leader of the Lib Dems, speaks to the camera at the end of the film. He uses his moment in the spotlight to rally the support of Brits who “wake up every morning with that sinking feeling” and are dissatisfied with both the Conservative government and the infighting of the Labour Party.

He ends the spot by declaring that “the fightback starts here”.

The PPB will air tonight on BBC One at 6.55pm an ITV at 6.25pm. It was produced by Silver Lining Films.

Last week saw Labour broadcast its first PPB of 2017, focusing on the Tory government’s alleged mishandling of the NHS.
