DC Comics has banished an orbiting star from its logo and plumped for a flat blue typeface as it seeks to pay homage to its 80 year history in the comic book business.

This is embodied by a return to bare bones styling shorn of the frippery which crept into later iterations of the trademark and dovetails with the release of DC Universe: Rebirth Special #1 comic later this month, an attempt to return to classic plotlines and story techniques.

Chief creative officer Geoff Johns said: “To me, Rebirth and the new DC logo are built on what’s come before while looking to what will come tomorrow.”

The twisted timelines of DC’s superhero menagerie had become increasingly complicated after decades of plotlines, deaths and character development led to an increasingly unworkable forest of branching story arcs.

That prompted the New 52 reboot in 2011 which saw the slate wiped clean or streamlined in a bid to attract new readers. On a bid to placate the hardcore readership however Rebirth will bring back some elements of pre-2011.

The new-look, old-look will appear on the front covers of titles such as Batman and Superman from next month before expanding into DC’s movie and TV operations later in the year.
