Innovative adventure brand Vollebak, founded by Steve and Nick Tidball, has released their first film, “Between Life and Death,” promoting the brand and, specifically, their “Condition Black” product. Shot on a Red Monochrome camera with vintage Russian prime lenses, director Chris Palmer worked with Vollebak, named as “Startup of the Year” in The Drum’s New Year Honours 2015, to recreate the sights and sounds of “condition black” (a military terms for physical and mental states during life and death situations) in the mountains, using only the Condition Black Jacket itself.

The film was created to capture the essence of “condition black,” including fatigue, disorientation and hallucinations associated with the phenomenon. The jacket’s design was inspired by NASA’s use of psychology and physiology in their Apollo 11 spacesuit and, in an interesting twist, the soundtrack is composed entirely from recordings of space made on NASA’s 2009 Voyager mission.

The brand name, Vollebak, is Flemish for “all out.” In a previous conversation with The Drum, Nick Tidball said, “I just love the attitude it embodies, both in terms of how we approach sport and creativity. It’s about that perfectionism point, which there is no compromise. It just summarized everything we thought and looked awesome.”
