The Coachella Music Festival is looking to make cash payments a thing of the past by teaming up with Square to provide mobile payments services using near field communication (NFC) technology.

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, hosted in the Colorado Desert, has been running in one form or another since 1991.

This year it has tapped the services of mobile payments provider Square, to help digital services at point of sale. Furthermore, it has provided assurances that every vendor will take digital payments.

Contactless payments through mobile, on the Apple Watch via Apple Pay, Android Pay, and Samsung Pay are all theoretically possible through the installation of Square readers, according to the event organisers.

It may well be risky business relying upon the modern smartphone holding a charge for the duration of the festival however for those wanting to try the festival wallet-free.
