Music streaming service Tidal has hit 3m subscribers after racking up 900,000 new customers last June alone, as it marks its first year of operation.

Scotching the concerns of naysayers who doubted that Tidal would ever take off the service appears to have benefitted from a raft of exclusive releases from big name stars such as Rhianna, Beyonce and Kanye West – all of whom own a stake in the business.

In addition to growing its subscriber base Tidal has also increased its library of songs to 40m and brought on board additional artists to its ownership team including Lil Wayne, TIP and Damian Marley.

The army of subscribers includes 1.35m people who are stumping up $19.99 for Tidal’s High fidelity streaming service.
