A half dozen prominent players of the popular Fifa franchise of videogames have been hit by hackers on YouTube who made off with millions of Fifa coins, the ingame currency, whilst wreaking havoc on teams by deleting key players.

Gamers going by the usernames AnesonGib, Bateson87,matthdgamerNepenthez, Nick28T, and W2S (who collectively reach 5m YouTube subscribers) after hackers managed to convince producer EA Sports to transfer their individual online accounts to email addresses under their control.

Commenting on the heist Nick28T said: “Basically, someone called in pretending to be me and... got in to my account.”

Once the fraudsters had gained access they immediately began pawning off high value players such as Ronaldo, who is worth 3.4m Fifa coins – equivalent to around £800.

A spokesperson for EA remarked: “We encourage all Fifa players to secure their accounts with authentication and verification steps, which we outline on our help and our product sites.

"We are consistently working through our customer experience teams to secure accounts and make sure players are educated when account compromises are made."

Since the attack EA has restored the individual accounts with the addition of extra security measures.
