To generate these numbers the firm hired accountancy firm to Deloitte to quantify digital revenues raised through its eponymous search engine and other products, which together support around 210,000 jobs.

This includes new roles such as digital advertising and search optimisation which have emerged on the back of these innovations.

Overall the report outlined half a dozen areas where Google has made a direct contribution including; expanding exports, growing audiences, display advertising, smartphone applications, cloud –based productivity services and direct initiatives such as improving digital literacy.

Banging the firms drum Eileen Naughton, Google’s managing director for UK and Ireland, said: “Google is a growth engine for British businesses large and small, helping them unlock their digital potential.

"Our technology helps companies be discovered by new customers, boosts productivity by helping teams collaborate better, and helps content creators get paid for their creativity.”

Google has been courting headlines of a more negative nature in recent months as it comes under fire for alleged abuses of its monopoly position and tax dodging.
