Our insatiable demand for more and more cloud storage has prompted Facebook to stump up £321m for a 500,000sq/ft wind-powered data centre in Texas.

It is the fifth such facility to be built by the social media giant, utilising energy efficient servers powered by a nearby 200 megawatt wind farm.

The Fort Worth facility is needed to store billions of photos and videos hosted by the social network as well as the constant stream of messages and updates that appear.

It follows the construction of similar centres in Altoona, Iowa, Forest City, North Carolina and Lulea, Sweden to meet global demand for its services.
