Vodafone has confirmed it is in “early discussions” with Liberty Global regarding an exchange of assets with Virgin Media.

The company on Friday said that it was in discussions regarding a “possible exchange of selected assets between the two companies”.

With the mergers of EE and BT and O2 and Three on the horizon, likely going to shake up the UK mobile landscape, Vodafone is looking for back-up of its own in the form of a partnership with UK telecom firm Virgin Media.

The above mergers would leave Vodafone in the dust, resulting in the carrier looking to scramble additional resources to take the battle to the newly formed companies.

Vodafone did however put to rest any speculation of a merger saying “Vodafone is not in discussions with Liberty Global concerning a combination of the two companies”.
