Need to Know – The latest US media & marketing news: Netflix eyes China, Apple Homekit is coming & Candy Crush set to hook Windows 10 users

Morning all, here’s a glimpse at all the media and marketing news you should know today.

1. Netflix is in talks to enter China’s $5.9bn video streaming market, according to Bloomberg. The firm has opened discussions with Alibaba’s Jack Ma and Wasu Media Holding.

2. Reddit has launched an anti-harassment policy as the result of a survey of 15,000 redditors. The New York Times reports that Ellen Pao, chief executive of Reddit, said: “We’ve heard a lot of complaints and found that even our existing users were unhappy with the content on the site.”

3. Apple has announced that its internet of things enabled Homekit will be released in June. The Wall Street Journal reports that consumers will be able to control household appliances - such as heating and lighting – as early as next month.

4. Amazon is to release an advertising platform for mobile developers looking to sell or distribute their wares on Amazon’s Appstore and Google Play. Media Post states that ‘Advertise Your App with Amazon’ lets developers promote apps across Amazon’s network.

5. T-Mobile has come under fire for doling out six figures on the #neversettleforverizon hashtag. Adweek reports that the US mobile carrier would have paid as much as $200,000 for the promoted tweet.

6. Ad administration platform Sizmek has picked up mobile DSP StrikeAd for $11.7m, according to AdExchanger. The acquisition of the media buying platform will bolster the firm’s mobile-specific strategy.

7. Bing has followed in Google’s stead to favour mobile friendly sites for users on smartphone and tablet devices. The Verge reports that the firm looked to strike a fine balance between the best mobile sites and the most accurate results.

8. Candy Crush is set to ship with Windows 10 machines as part of an three game package. The Guardian notes that the addictive puzzle game will accompany Minesweeper, Solitaire and Hearts.
