Buzzfeed has acquired animated GIF firm GoPop for an undisclosed sum in a move which will see it put to work the start-up team on bettering its in-development mobile apps.

The San Francisco-based service, which was launched February 2014, will close in the coming weeks as four members of the GoPop team are integrated with Buzzfeed’s mobile developers.

At Buzzfeed the GoPop team will work on a number of apps – which will presumably contain GIFs – with the current mobile developers.

A statement issued jointly by team GoPop read: “In October, we started chatting with BuzzFeed and we were impressed by their vision for the future of media, a vision that goes far beyond viral cats and now includes serious investigative reporting.

“When they suggested we join forces to transform their existing apps and start a new group focused on mobile experiments, it felt like a great opportunity to continue exploring the core ideas of GoPop on a new scale.”

Previously created GIFS (or Pops as they were called) will be remain available to access online although the app will be pulled from digital stores.
