Google will have to do more to resolve its EU competition case according to EU digital chief Günther Oettinger.

Following the EU Google competition investigation reopening in September, looking at in particular how the US firm benefits from its search and advertising dominance, Oettinger, speaking at the DLD conference in Munich, claimed that Google must do more to accommodate regulators if they are to reach a “balanced decision”.

He said: "There was an offer last spring for a compromise but I think it was not really convincing... We are continuing to investigate, going deeper and deeper and hope to have a balanced decision by the middle of the year."

"Google has to bring more offers to us so we can make a really convincing compromise."

On the need for legislation to help regulate companies investing in the region, he said: “Twenty-eight fragmented markets are not good for investment, not good for startups, not good for developing new working places and not good for the user.

“If [foreign companies] are playing in our European market then we must have some instruments to come to a guarantee that they are acting on the basis of our rules."

Google has faced considerable rulings from the EU of late, the most prominent of being the European Court of Justice's decision to implement the "right to be forgotten" legislation, granting individuals the power to request links to specific stories and articles be removed.
