Twitter is planning to embed ads on external websites and apps’ Twitter streams in a bid to boost engagements and revenue from non-users.

The social media site announced it is looking at selling ads within the embedded Twitter streams of partnered websites and publishers at CES last week, according to the Wall Street Journal.

During the presentation, the social network said it was considering partnerships with ESPN’s SportsCentre app and Flipboard, where it would monetise embedded tweet streams with ads - for a slice of the revenue.

The move would help the firm capture audiences outside of its userbase making it less dependent on those regularly accessing the site.

Twitter’s privacy policy came under fire in November after it emerged Twitter was analysing which apps were installed on user smartphones to deliver tailored ad content.
