Microsoft has unleashed its latest Lumia device, the Lumia 735, a mid-range gadget whose primary claim to fame is as the first UK handset to have Cortana enabled outside the box.

Running Windows Phone 8.1, the latest iteration of Microsoft’s custom operating system, the phone has a wide angle front facing camera and has been specifically designed for selfies with a front facing 5MP camera and associated selfie app to obtain the best shots.

The 4.7in screen device can also be updated with an optional wireless charging shell to replace the back cover and 8GB of internal memory, with the option to expand this to 128GB with a micro SD card.

Conor Pierce, VP of Microsoft Devices for the UK and Ireland, said: “People are moving from using their front-facing camera to take a close up selfie or have a solo Skype call, to making it much more about where they are and what they are doing with their friends. With the Lumia 735 we’re enabling people too simply and quickly capture and share more of what they want, it’s a great innovation and showcases the best of Microsoft experiences.”

The Lumia 735 will go on sale from 2 October for £19.99 on contract in a series of snappy colours; including orange, green, grey and white.
