IAB UK enlists psychologist Dr Simon Hampton to bring deeper understanding of mobile users

The Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) UK has hired a renowned psychologist to help educate and provide the group with a deeper understanding of the latest theories on digital’s effect on human interactions.

Dr Simon Hampton, from the University of East Anglia, has been enlisted to offer his views on how users interact with the mobile platform and how advertisers can best benefit from this knowledge.

The organisation first heard the doctor’s theories at a presentation during its Mobile Engage 2014 conference in London, where he provided an “alternative view” on the power of digital.

During his three month contract, the psychologist will be tasked to educate staff on how smartphones serve as a personal diaries and how touch-screen interfaces shape human feelings. Furthermore, he will provide insights on persuasion through the mobile platform.

Jon Mew, director of mobile and operations at the IAB, said: “Appointing Dr Simon Hampton is an exciting move for the IAB as Simon gave a really engaging presentation at Mobile Engage 2014 and we thought bringing him into the IAB and taking him out to our membership base would be a great way to showcase what digital has to offer.

“Dr Hampton has an unconventional point of view on digital - one that we feel many brands would be really interested to hear about.”

New appointee Hampton, added: “The opportunity to work with the IAB was one that I couldn't refuse. They are serious about seeing sound and up-to-date psychological theory and research put into practise.

“I also admire the quality of their own research and how they cross reference it with bodies of knowledge beyond 'the trade'. I anticipate a rich and rewarding collaboration.”

The IAB is the UK trade association for digital advertising, representing most of the UK’s leading brands, media owners and agencies.

Earlier this month, the IAB UK Mobile Board appointed Ben Regensburger president of Tapad Europe.
