Diageo has appointed Nicola Mendelsohn, Facebook’s vice president of EMEA, to serve as a non-executive director.

Diageo, trades in 180 countries and employs 28,000 people

Mendelsohn has been responsible for operations across Facebook’s Europe, Middle East and Asia businesses since joining the social network in 2013. During her time there she focused on increasing revenues through developing digital marketing solutions and strengthening relationships with the marketing community.

She will take up her new role in September this year, when she will also join Diageo's audit, nomination and remuneration committees.

Prior to her time at Facebook, Mendelsohn was president of the IPA.

Diageo chairman Dr Franz Humer said: “I am delighted Nicola is joining Diageo’s board. Her senior experience at the forefront of digital marketing and communications will be of great benefit to Diageo and its brands, as we seek to pursue long term profitable growth through innovation in all areas of our business.

“Additionally her reputation as one of the UK’s leading businesswomen and her track record in championing women in business will be an inspiration to our people and the way that we work. I look forward to welcoming her.”

The drinks company was under fire from the ASA last month after a Captain Morgan advert that linked alcohol with “daring and toughness” was banned after it claimed the rum brand could help “overcome boredom”.

Diageo is a premium drinks producer with an array of brands including Johnnie Walker, Crown Royal, J&B, Windsor, Buchanan's and Bushmills whiskies and more.
