A survey of UK consumers conducted by retail technology group Omnico has found that shoppers are still shirking online purchases from their mobile phones with 56 per cent of those surveyed never having done so.

Researchers highlight three key reasons why this might be so with 33 per cent citing security concerns, 31 per cent deterred by small screens and 29 per cent preferring the experience of a physical store.

This suggests significant scope for continued expansion in the sector for retailers willing and able to embrace the sector.

Steve Thomas, CTO of Omnico Group, commented: “Whilst the rise of mobile shopping is undeniable, it is clear that there is still a huge untapped audience to be converted. We are increasingly engaging with retailers that just want to make a start on this path and come to us to leverage the experience we can give them from successfully delivering programmes in these areas. Indeed, our research shows that retailers must remember that they need to innovate across all channels in order to reap the maximum benefits.”

A total of 2,007 UK adults was surveyed for the research.
