David Cameron has apologised for hiring Andy Coulson as director of communications, committing to a promise he made in 2011.

Coulson was today found guilty of conspiracy to hack phones at the phone-hacking trial at the Old Bailey.

Cameron said that he took “full responsibility” for the hiring, adding: “I did so on undertakings I was given by him about phone hacking and those turn out not to be the case. I always said if I turned out to be wrong I would make a full and frank apology and I do that today.

“I’m extremely sorry I employed him. It was the wrong decision and I am very clear about that.”

Cameron continued: “I gave someone a second chance and it turned out to be a bad decision."

In 2011, Cameron said that he would make an apology if it turned out that Coulson had lied to him and did know about phone hacking.
