The Asia-Pacific region will account for a third (32.8 per cent) of all Twitter users this year, research from eMarketer has found, a figure which is set to grow to over 40 per cent by the end of 2018.

This compares to the 28 per cent of accounts currently held in North America, a figure which eMarketer predicts will not grow by much over the coming years.

The research predicted that growth in countries such as Indonesia, India and Australia will help Twitter to reach the 400 million user mark by 2018.

As part of the research, eMarketer analysed Twitter's total users by region and country using 400 data points including country-specific demographic and socioeconomic factors.
