Twitter has issued a public apology after many users had their account passwords reset by mistake following an internal ‘system error’ at the micro-blogging platform.

The glitch saw emails issued to many users informing them that their passwords had been reset as their account had been compromised by ‘a website or service not associated with Twitter’.

Those affected by the move were urged to choose a new password, leading to an avalanche of tweets from confused and worried tweeters.

In a statement a Twitter spokesman said: “We unintentionally sent some password reset notices tonight due to a system error. We apologise to the affected users for the inconvenience.”
