Dyson is set to put £5m into a robotics lab at Imperial College in London, which will help robots to ‘understand and adapt to the world around them’.

The engineering company, which is best known for founder Sir James Dyson’s bagless vacuum cleaner, has been working with professors at the Imperial College for over a decade, and is set to run the lab, which will cover robotic vacuum cleaners and also domestic robots.

“My generation believed the world would be overrun by robots by the year 2014. We now have the mechanical and electronic capabilities, but robots still lack understanding - seeing and thinking in the way we do,” said James Dyson.

However, the lab will not be financed by Dyson alone: an addiction £3m in funding is set to be gathered from other sources.
