ABC Grandstand is to broadcast a comedy ‘roast’ of veteran commentator Kerry O’Keeffe live on ABC Local Radio and ABC Grandstand on digital radio during tomorrow’s third day of coverage of the fifth Ashes test.

The event marks the broadcaster’s final Test commentary for ABC Grandstand this week after announcing his retirement from cricket broadcasting during the Boxing Day Test.

“In a fitting tribute he will be sent off with a Roast by his ABC colleagues and friends,” the ABC said in a statement.

“The Roast will feature a multitude of Kerry’s most memorable commentary highlights, along with some of Kerry’s long suffering colleagues including Harsha Bhogle – famous for the Naga chilli eating challenge, Bryan Waddle – the voice of New Zealand cricket and Neil Manthorp – esteemed commentator of South African cricket, as well as messages from the Australian cricket team.”

Grandstand Manager Craig Norenbergs said: “Kerry O’Keeffe will be greatly missed by the listening audience and the ABC Grandstand team. Kerry has been an integral part of the ABC’s commentary team for these past 13 years.”

“Through his unique sense of humour, reading of the game and that laugh, he has become a favourite of cricket audiences in summer.”

His final report will be the One Day International against England on 19 January.
