Broadcasters including BBC, ITV and Sky have been cleared by Ofcom following almost 700 complaints about graphic footage shown following the murder of soldier Lee Rigby.

The footage, shot by an eyewitness, was shown before the 9pm watershed and saw Michael Adelbolajo – one of two people convicted of the murder at the Old Bailey earlier this week – with blood on his hands.

Ofcom has ruled that the footage was in the public interest, but stated that it had kept the decision until after the trial of Adelbolajo (29) and Michael Adebowale (22).

The full and detailed outcome will be published by Ofcom in early 2014.
