Time has named the Pope as its Person of the Year 2013 in a tweet which has now been retweeted nearly 17,000 times – making it @Time’s most retweeted tweet ever.The magazine’s editors chose the newly installed pontiff as the person who has made the greatest impact on the world stage over the past 12 months, earning him a place on the news titles front cover.Analysis by Topsy showed that within minutes of the news being announced simultaneously on Twitter and the Today Show terms such as @Pontifex and #TIMEPOY began racking up tens of thousands of mentions across 130+ countries.

Last year’s tweet naming Barack Obama as 2012’s person of the year garnered just 3,281 retweets.
