Facebook announces artificial intelligence plans

Facebook has announced that, further to reports that it was developing an artificial intelligence laboratory, it has hired deep learning and machine learning scientists, NYU’s Professor Yann LeCun to lead the venture.

The goal is to bring major advance in artificial intelligence

Lecun announced his hire and Facebook’s plans to develop artificial intelligence via Facebook today.

“Big news today!” he said.

“Facebook has created a new research laboratory with the ambitious, long-term goal of bringing about major advances in Artificial Intelligence.

“I am thrilled to announce that I have accepted the position of director of this new lab.”

“Simultaneously, Facebook and New York University's Center for Data Science are entering a partnership to carry out research in data science, machine learning, and AI."

He added that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will announce the news during his presentation at the NIPS Workshop on Deep Learning on Tuesday.
