Spotify readying a free mobile streaming service, set to launch next week

Spotify is preparing to launch a free mobile version of its music-streaming service next week.

Currently Spotify is only is available free on desktop. To access it on a mobile device you have to be a subscriber to its premium service.

However now, users of iOS, Android and Windows Phone 8 devices will be able to access its service without paying a monthly fee. Like the free desktop site,, it will be supported by adverts which tend to appear every three or four songs.

However, according to the Wall Street Journal, it will not offer not offer an unlimited access to the service, instead giving users a limited number of tracks on-demand and custom playlists and radio stations based on their listening habits.

Ahead of the expected 11 December launch, Spotify revealed a new website which looks to make its business model clear and show details of how it calculates payouts for artists who have their music streamed on the platform.
